NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.–A lot of college students have a lot to do: balancing a sport, balancing music, balancing just being away from home. However, imagine balancing your own business at 21 while being a full-time student.
Alex Mullen ’23, majoring in Business Administration and Marketing with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Human Resources. Wow, that was a lot to say. Mullen balanced two majors and two minors while studying here at Westminster and developed his auto detailing business titled AM Auto Detailing.
“I started detailing cars around the age of 14. I started doing them in my neighborhood.” Mullen added, “I have continually reinvested in it, and now have a fully mobile retail business serving the Pittsburgh and New Castle area while I am in school.”
Without a doubt, Mullen expanded AM Auto Detailing after making his area in Pittsburgh.
“I’ve been lucky enough to work with some really great people around Pittsburgh. Steelers players, business owners, and car collectors. It’s been a great experience for me.”
Some notable clients Mullen has worked with are Steelers wide receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool. Plus, Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Mullen has also worked with Jared Zych, owner of NOLAC Inc., located in South Side, Pittsburgh.
“All of them have been influential to me, and it’s an honor to be able to work with them.”
Mullen has also built AM Auto Detailing through social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. While posting daily on all three platforms, Mullen also attracted clients through word of mouth advertising and simply by delivering a job well done.
Additionally, Mullen manufactures its retail apparel, selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and long-sleeve shirts through its AM Auto Detailing website. These clothes have been her main focus for now; however, he said he was open to making more clothes in the future.
There are many challenges Mullen faced while trying to balance both school and AM Auto Detailing.
“I’ve really tried to focus my efforts on attracting my clientele to New Castle to limit my trips to and from Pittsburgh. Occasionally I’ll make the drive back to Pittsburgh on weekends, but mostly I’ve tried to expand my business here.”
To add, Mullen is an excellent student while earning a 3.7 GPA while having two majors and two minors. It’s safe to say. Mullen takes academics and his business very seriously.
“It can be very difficult to fight burnout. I get tired a lot. Yet, I try to fight it by making time for myself and adjusting a work schedule to get results.”
Mullen also talked about what he hopes to take away from this experience.
“I just hope to meet and learn from everyone I work with and still have something of my own that I can always do. I want to be remembered as someone who really cared about everyone and everything, that I was a part of. Besides being seen as someone who has to do something they love in their own way.”
Mullen made an impression on me and how he balanced everything on his plate while being a full-time student. I hope it impressed you as well.
